The Horn of Africa faces a significant threat from violent extremist organisations (VEOs), such as Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda and ISIS. While research has explored VEO recruitment, a critical knowledge gap exists, regarding street children’s vulnerability to violent extremism (VE). This concept for funding focuses on Kenya as a regional hub by reviewing the challenges of quantifying the street demographic to VE. It delves into the potential vulnerabilities of street children to VE, making the argument that while the vulnerabilities exist, the responses and recommendations remain anecdotal with no empirical backing. It also acknowledges the risks and opportunities associated with researching this sensitive topic, including potential stigmatisation and access difficulties. Furthermore, it outlines the rationale for a participatory approach, explores ethical considerations, and describes the specific methods for data collection and analysis. It proposes a strong case for research contending that vulnerabilities associated with street children/undocumented families and VE can only be sustainably resolved through a comprehensive, empirical research, to support sound policymaking, government response and development investment in programs.
