Beyond Father's Day: Investing in Responsible Fatherhood for a More Equitable, Peaceful, and Prosperous World
Briefs and Policy Reviews
Overview
The celebration of Father’s Day serves as a poignant reminder of the vital role fathers play in the lives of their children and the broader community. Beyond its sentimental value, research increasingly highlights the far-reaching impact of involved fatherhood on various aspects of society. Empirical evidence links responsible fatherhood to sustainable development, good governance, international relations, and peace building, with significant insights from African contexts.
Despite its recognized importance, several gaps remain in effectively engaging fathers, such as limited data, social and cultural barriers, economic constraints, and insufficient policies. Addressing these gaps offers substantial returns: better health outcomes, reduced juvenile delinquency, increased educational attainment, and enhanced civic participation. Promoting responsible fatherhood is a smart investment, yielding economic growth, poverty reduction, safer communities, and stronger governance. International Father’s Day can be leveraged to raise awareness, challenge gender norms, advocate for family-friendly policies, and engage fathers in community initiatives.
This policy brief demonstrates the critical role of responsible fatherhood in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), promoting good governance, fostering positive international relations, and contributing to peace-building efforts. It recommends investments in programs and policies that support involved fatherhood have the potential to yield significant returns across multiple sectors, enhancing the well-being of individuals, families, communities, and nations.
